Therefore, there is no jouissance for man but phallic jouissance, that is to say, limited, subject to the threat of castration; phallic jouissance that constitutes the sexual identity of man. There is no equivalent for women of the primal father, no “hommoinzin” escaping castration: the jouissance of the Other, hoped jouissance, awaited, and out of reach of this primal father, might also be impossible for the woman, but it is not struck with the prohibition of castration. Then, feminine jouissance is other and above all limitless. It is a “supplementary jouissance” (a supplement), pronounced as such in the flamboyant seminar “Encore.”

Il n’est donc de jouissance pour l’homme qu’une jouissance phallique, c’est-à-dire limitée, soumise à la menace de la castration, jouissance phallique qui constitue l’identité sexuelle de l’homme. Il n’y a pas pour les femmes d’équivalent du père originaire, pas d'”hommoinzin” échappant à la castration : la jouissance de l’Autre, jouissance espérée, attendue et hors de portée de ce père originaire, peut être également impossible pour la femme, n’est cependant pas frappée de l’interdit de la castration. La jouissance féminine est donc autre et surtout sans limites. Elle est alors une “jouissance supplémentaire” (un supplément) énoncée comme telle dans le flamboyant séminaire Encore
