Humiliation is an attack on honor or dignity. Honor depends on a code of values in which I am involved. Humiliation is a time, a scene, an action that puts us in default with respect to the code that, from then on, does not recognize us anymore. The fuller the code, the more honor can become a matter of life and death: nowadays, we can find it ridiculous that nobles of the Grand Siècle risked their lives in duels for matters of honor. But it is a question here of approaching the question of humiliation not from the philosophical side but from the side of the subject of the unconscious which exists only in relation to a place of the castrated code. I announce the color: if shame is, in my opinion, a clinic of specular imaginary identifications, humiliation, as for it, is not a clinic of the symbolic identification, but an echo of this one.

L’humiliation est une atteinte à l’honneur ou à la dignité. L’honneur dépend d’un code de valeurs dans lequel je m’inscris. L’humiliation est un temps, une scène, une action qui nous met en défaut par rapport au code qui dès lors ne nous reconnaît plus. Plus le code est plein, plus l’honneur peut devenir une question de vie ou de mort : de nos jours, on peut trouver ridicule que des nobles du Grand Siècle aient pu risquer leur vie en duel pour des affaires d’honneur. Mais il s’agit ici d’aborder la question de l’humiliation non du côté philosophique mais du côté du sujet de l’inconscient qui n’existe que par rapport à un lieu du code castré. J’annonce la couleur : si la honte est, à mon sens, une clinique des identifications imaginaires spéculaires, l’humiliation, quant à elle, n’est pas une clinique de l’identification symbolique, mais un écho de celle-ci.
